History of Hopi Ear Candling
(Thermal Auricular Therapy)
Brief History: The practice of ear candling dates back approximately 2,500 years to the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Tibetan and American Indian cultures.
Further evidence can also be found among the people of the Siberian prairies, Mayan and Aztec. They used ear candles for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis.
Ancient wall paintings (such as those found within the caves of the Grand Canyon), show their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies of the tribe.
With the development of modern medicine – using syringing and antibiotics – for the treatments of ear, nose and throat, ear candling became forgotten.
It was only in the recent past when this treatment started to gain popularity again.
The best known ear candles are the Hopi ear candles. Practice reached the modern world via the Native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona (Hopi means peaceful people), people who have a high degree of spirituality and great medical knowledge. The Hopi Ear Candles were introduced into Europe through the involvement of a German company called BIOSUN and the Hopi Indians.
Since 1985 BIOSUN have been re-establishing their popularity and researching the use of candles.
